We are approved for Certification Maintenance credits at 12 credits for the series and 1.5 credits per session

Session 1       Understanding the Science of Climate Change & Local Impacts

Speakers from the UW Climate Impacts Group (Lara Whitely-Bender) and Alison Van Gorp of the Cascade Land Conservancy help us understand the big picture of climate change and the factors to be considered by local communities in Washington.

Session 2       How Cities Can Make a Difference

Speakers from local agencies and research organization show how cities can be part of the global effort to recognize and address climate change, even when higher levels of government are not acting.  Speakers include Jill Simmons of Seattle’s Climate change Policy Group, David Batker of Real Economics, and Marc Daudon of Cascadia Consulting.

Session 3       Land Use and Urban Form as Tools for Sustainable Communities

Hear Seattle Councilmember Peter Steinbrueck and Brian Sullivan of the Seattle Housing Authority on innovative ways to make sure that land use and urban form are tools for increasing sustainable development and living.  Hear candid insights into the challenges and complexities of making land use and urban form work toward sustainable communities

Session 4       Transportation Solutions for Sustainable Communities

Local and regional transportation experts will bring valuable insights and ideas to tame the transportation juggernaut.  They will be asked to address the challenges of motivating changes in traditional ways of thinking about transportation and in travel behavior. Speakers include Jemae Hoffman of SDOT, Rob Johson of Transportation choices and Professor Anne Verdez Moudon of UW/CAUP.

Session 5       Urban Ecology Solutions for Sustainable Communities

Learn from academic experts on why urban ecology is so crucial to sustainable communities and what programs are effective to recreate and preserve this ecology.  Hear about successful examples of making urban ecology a central tenet of creating sustainable communities. Speakers include Associate Professor Nancy Rottle, UW Landscape Architecture and Marina Alberti, UW/CAUP.

Session 6       Green Buildings and Green Communities

Hear local experts address the increasing discussion over the value of green building as a way to foster sustainability and learn about successful programs and models for promoting green buildings, green communities, and energy efficiencies.

Session 7       Local Solutions to Climate Change -- What Acting Locally Really Means

It’s not just about professionals and governments -- learn from several successful local grassroots organizations that have initiated programs to educate and engage citizens in sustainable practices.   They illustrate the broad reach of sustainability -- from food security to environmental restoration and creating walkable communities.  Speakers include Vic Opperman of Sustainable Ballard and Michael McGinn of Seattle Great City Initiative.

Session 8       Leadership in Planning for Sustainable Communities

Hear from APA leaders, local officials, and planners on how to provide leadership in promoting sustainability in your community.  From broad policies to guiding local public and private practices, hear about successes and challenges to moving toward sustainable communities. Do you want to influence the future of your profession?

Are you willing to share what you’ve learned since college with a current student?

The St. Paul Campus Career Center of the University of Minnesota invites you to join us in preparing our graduate and undergraduate students for career success.  One of the most frequent requests we get from students is for contacts in their fields of interest, and the panels of professionals who speak in our career classes are always a hit!  We hope you’ll consider being one such contact.  There are several ways you can share your expertise, and there are opportunities to fit any schedule. Visit http://www.stpaulcareers.umn.edu/alumni/volunteering.html for a description of volunteer possibilities and to sign up!

Comprehensive Planning Video posted 2/1/08

The Citizen Planner Committee recently sponsored a video conference on comprehensive planning. One of the products of the video conference was a dvd which the committee wants to make available to anyone who is interested. Geared primarily toward citizen planners, the dvd could serve as a refresher for staff planners and as a nice training tool for community planning commissions. The presentation (dvd), given by John Shardlow, was done in a manner conducive to separation into several segments for short training sessions. It is available for $5.00 including postage by contacting the MnAPA Chapter administrators at 9288 Beverly Drive, Breezy Point, Mn 56472 (1-888-882-5369) or email: mnapa_admin@tds.net
